Hate Leads To Murder In Portland
Veteran Ricky John Best (53) and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche (23) lost their lives after standing up to a well-known white supremacist in Portland, Oregon who was screaming obscenities towards two Muslim women. Micah David-Cole Fletcher (21) survived his wounds and also stood up to the alleged murderer. Micah has recently returned home after suffering severe injuries.
A Muslim organization entitled Muslim Education Trust and Celebrate Mercy created the Muslims Unite for Portland Heroes which has raised nearly $600,000 for the victims families. While Portland continues to mourn over this tragic incident, the community has come together and showed their support to three real life heroes.
The Portland City Council released a statement shortly after the event. The following is an excerpt from their official statement:
The city of Portland has a heavy heart right now, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the deceased and injured.
This is an especially sad and disturbing incident. People lost their lives or were injured because they stood up to hate.
We need to offer our heartfelt support to the two women and others who were targeted. The courage of the people who stood up for them is a reminder that we as a city need to stand together to denounce hate.
The Discussion
Timothy, Walter, and Cecilia speak about the horrible Portland murders, and enter a long discussion about the ongoing issue the United States has with white nationalism – especially when it manifests itself with violence. Each give their personal outlook on the issue near the end of the program.
