Sanders Slams Trump For Leaving Paris Climate Accord

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) did not mince words after President Donald Trump announced the United States would pull out of the Paris Agreement (Paris Climate Accords).

President Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement is an abdication of American leadership and an international disgrace. At this moment, when climate change is already causing devastating harm around the world, we do not have the moral right to turn our backs on efforts to preserve this planet for future generations.

Sanders also published several tweets in response to President Trump’s announcement.

How States Are Reacting To Trump’s Announcement

Gov. Jerry Brown (D-CA), Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA), and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) formed the US Climate Alliance – a coalition of states that will agree to uphold the tenants of the Paris Agreement. They have since been joined by Governors from Hawaii, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont. 187 US Mayors have also agreed to join the alliance stating:

As 187 US Mayors representing 52 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We will intensify efforts to meet each of our cities’ current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy.

“We want to further strengthen our relationship with China, the world is moving in a direction that I want California to be a part of.” Governor Brown told the L.A. Times before his trip to China to discuss the Paris Agreement in hopes to convince China that a large segment of the United States continues to be dedicated to the climate accords.

How Exactly Does The US Pull Out Of The Paris Agreement

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), outlines a framework on which agreeing parties can exit from the Paris Agreement. Below is Article 28 of the rules which detail the precise steps the United States will have to take in order to leave the Paris Agreement:

1. At any time after three years from the date on which this Agreement has entered into force for a Party, that Party may withdraw from this Agreement by giving written notification to the Depositary.

2. Any such withdrawal shall take effect upon expiry of one year from the date of receipt by the Depositary of the notification of withdrawal, or on such later date as may be specified in the notification of withdrawal.

3. Any Party that withdraws from the Convention shall be considered as also having withdrawn from this Agreement.

The UNFCC documents that the Paris Agreement went into effect within the United States on November 4, 2016. Meaning, the earliest the United States could file paper work to withdraw from the accords is November 2019, and the earliest the US could withdraw from the international agreement is November 2020. The political landscape within the United States could look much different in 2020, at which point the country may never officially withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
